UV Disinfection Upgrade for Warrnambool Water Treatment Plant
Wannon Water required a new UV disinfection system at the Warrnambool Water Treatment Plant to support future Health-Based Target (HBT) compliance and improve resilience against seasonal taste and odour events. The upgrade needed to deliver validated Cryptosporidium reduction with minimal hydraulic impact while allowing future advanced oxidation treatment.
FILTEC supplied and commissioned a TrojanUVFlex UV disinfection system that meets current compliance requirements while enabling future UV advanced oxidation. The compact, low-headloss solution provides long-term operational flexibility and water quality resilience.
HBT Compliance and Future AOX Treatment Capability
The existing treatment strategy required enhancement to support future protozoa compliance and improve resilience to changing raw water conditions. The upgrade therefore required:
Validated 2.5-log Cryptosporidium reduction
Extremely low reactor headloss
Compact installation within existing infrastructure
Upgrade pathway to UV advanced oxidation
Long-term operational reliability and service support
The solution needed to balance immediate compliance with future flexibility for taste and odour treatment without major new infrastructure.

TrojanUVFlex UV Disinfection System Design
FILTEC supplied and commissioned a duty/standby TrojanUVFlex UV disinfection system comprising of two DN900 Flex 100 reactors, each fitted with 16 Solo Lamps. The system delivers validated 2.5-log Cryptosporidium reduction with headloss of 66 mm at 555 L/s - well below the <500 mm project specs.
The treatment system includes:
TrojanUVFlex DN900 UV reactors
Duty/standby UV configuration
Automated UV monitoring and control
Low-headloss reactor design
Expandable configuration for future AOX capability
The compact, energy-efficient design reduces operational and maintenance requirements while supporting future advanced oxidation upgrades.

UV Advanced Oxidation Upgrade Pathway
The TrojanUVFlex system was chosen for validated UV disinfection performance and future UV Advanced Oxidation capability for taste and odour treatment.
Expandable reactor capacity to 64 lamps
Provision for hydrogen peroxide dosing
Compatibility with chlorine quenching
AOX scalability using existing reactor infrastructure
Flexible response to seasonal water quality events
This staged approach provides Wannon Water with a practical pathway to future advanced oxidation treatment without requiring major new UV infrastructure.
Commissioning, Servicing and Long-Term Support
FILTEC commissioned and validated the UV disinfection system to verify treatment performance and integration, including:
UV reactor commissioning and validation
Performance verification testing
Control system integration
Routine maintenance and inspections
Lamp and quartz sleeve replacement
FILTEC continues to support the Warrnambool Water Treatment Plant through its Victorian-based UV service team, providing reactor inspections, sleeve cleaning, lamp replacement, wiper maintenance and UV performance verification.

A Future-Ready UV Treatment Solution for Warrnambool
The upgraded Warrnambool Water Treatment Plant now delivers:
Validated 2.5-log Cryptosporidium compliance
Low-headloss UV disinfection
Future-ready UV advanced oxidation capability
Taste and odour resilience
Local UV servicing
By combining validated TrojanUVFlex UV disinfection with scalable AOX-ready infrastructure, FILTEC delivered a treatment upgrade supporting compliance and long-term water quality resilience for Wannon Water.
