Multi-Site UV Disinfection Upgrades for MidCoast Council
MidCoast Council required UV disinfection upgrades across four sewage treatment plants to improve system reliability and maintain compliance with wastewater discharge requirements. Existing UV systems were approaching end of life and required replacement with modern, energy-efficient technology.
FILTEC was engaged as lead contractor to design, supply and install Wedeco LBX UV systems, including full integration with existing infrastructure. The upgrades were delivered across live, operational sites, requiring careful staging and coordination to minimise disruption while ensuring safe and compliant outcomes.
Delivering UV Upgrades Across Live Brownfield Sites
The project involved upgrading UV systems across multiple operational sewage treatment plants, each with site-specific constraints and ageing infrastructure. Key challenges included:
Integration with existing pipework and controls
Installation within confined plant spaces
Maintaining operation during works
Managing long equipment lead times
Safe delivery across active sites
The upgrades required a flexible, well-coordinated approach to minimise operational risk while achieving consistent outcomes across all locations.

Wedeco LBX UV System Replacement and Integration
FILTEC delivered UV system upgrades using Wedeco LBX technology, selected for its wastewater disinfection performance and suitability for retrofit applications. The upgrade scope included:
Removal of existing UV systems
Installation of Wedeco LBX units
Stainless steel pipework connections
UV control cabinet installation
PLC integration via Ethernet/IP
The upgraded systems provide reliable UV disinfection and compatibility with existing plant infrastructure.

Brownfield Installation and Coordinated Delivery
Works were undertaken within existing treatment plant structures, often in restricted spaces adjacent to operating equipment. FILTEC coordinated closely with subcontract partners to maintain site safety and operational continuity during installation.
Installation within existing plant buildings
Coordination with subcontractors
Staged cutovers to maintain operation
Mechanical and electrical integration
Site-specific delivery across four sites
A coordinated delivery approach ensured safe execution and consistent quality across all sites.
Commissioning and Ongoing UV Servicing
Commissioning activities were undertaken to verify system performance and ensure readiness for operation across all sites.
Functional system testing
PLC communication verification
Electrical and instrumentation checks
Proof of Performance testing
Operator training was provided to support effective use and maintenance of the UV systems. FILTEC continues to provide ongoing UV servicing across all sites, including lamp replacement, quartz sleeve cleaning, sensor calibration, and preventative maintenance.

Reliable, Modernised UV Disinfection Across Four Sites
The MidCoast Council UV upgrade project delivers:
Replacement of ageing UV systems
Improved disinfection reliability
Integration with existing infrastructure
Safe delivery in live environments
Verified performance across all sites
Through coordinated multi-site delivery, the project strengthens operational reliability and supports ongoing compliance across MidCoast Council’s wastewater treatment network.
