New TrojanUV3000Plus system at Feilding Wastewater Treatment Plant
Project Overview

Validated UV Performance for a Critical Discharge Point

FILTEC delivered a major UV disinfection upgrade at the Feilding Wastewater Treatment Plant, replacing ageing equipment with a validated TrojanUV3000Plus system.

Designed for peak flows of 1,250 m³/hr, the new open-channel system provides reliable E. coli reduction before treated wastewater is directed to land application or, when required, river discharge. The upgrade combines treatment performance, operational redundancy, automated cleaning and intelligent power control within the existing wastewater facility.

The Challenge

Achieving 4-Log Protozoa Removal During High Turbidity Events

Manawatū District Council required a wastewater UV disinfection upgrade capable of meeting current discharge requirements while providing greater reliability, efficiency and serviceability. The replacement system needed to integrate with the existing gravity-fed channels and maintain treatment continuity during installation.

Key requirements included:

  • Validated E. coli reduction

  • Capacity for peak wastewater flows

  • Integration within existing UV channels

  • Continued operation during installation

  • Improved servicing and parts availability

  • Lower whole-of-life operating costs

The Solution

TrojanUV3000Plus Open-Channel UV System

FILTEC supplied and installed a TrojanUV3000Plus system engineered for flows up to 1,250 m³/hr. Two UV banks contain 11 modules each, with four low-pressure amalgam lamps per module. This 132-lamp configuration provides treatment redundancy and delivers a validated UV dose of 30 mJ/cm² at the design conditions - giving Council a robust treatment barrier, not simply a like-for-like equipment replacement.

Efficient and Maintainable Wastewater Disinfection

The system automatically adjusts lamp output and the number of operating banks to match changing flow and water quality conditions. This avoids using more power than treatment demands require. Trojan ActiClean-WW technology combines chemical and mechanical sleeve cleaning to maintain UV intensity, limit fouling and reduce manual intervention, helping the system sustain reliable disinfection performance between scheduled services.

Ongoing UV Service and Maintenance

FILTEC commissioned the system and provided operator training to support safe, confident plant operation. Our involvement continues well beyond handover through local technical support, preventative maintenance, replacement lamps and critical spare parts. Backed by extensive Trojan UV expertise, FILTEC gives Manawatū District Council direct access to the people, knowledge and components required to keep this critical treatment barrier performing properly.

The Result

UV Treatment Built for Long-Term Performance

The Feilding Wastewater Treatment Plant now has a modern, validated UV disinfection system designed around real operating conditions.

The upgrade provides:

  • Validated E. coli treatment

  • Capacity for flows up to 1,250 m³/hr

  • Two-bank operational redundancy

  • Automated lamp and bank control

  • Reduced cleaning and maintenance demands

  • Ongoing local service support

By combining proven Trojan technology with FILTEC’s delivery and service capability, the upgrade strengthens treatment reliability while giving Council a more efficient and maintainable system for the years ahead.
