Upgrading Drinking Water Clarification at Casterton
Wannon Water required a new lamella plate clarifier and associated infrastructure at Casterton Water Treatment Plant. This water treatment plant clarifier upgrade had to integrate with the operating treatment process while coordinating mechanical, civil, electrical and automation works.
As main contractor, FILTEC completed the process and mechanical design, fabrication, installation, testing and commissioning of the 270 m³/hr upgrade. The scope included a sludge removal system, instrumentation and PLC/SCADA integration with the wider plant.
Integrating a Lamella Clarification System into an Existing Plant
The new lamella clarification system needed to be installed within an established water treatment plant, with interfaces across the treatment process and site infrastructure. Key requirements included:
New lamella plate clarifier
Sludge removal and process pipework
Inlet, outlet, overflow and sludge tie-ins
Concrete works, walkways and site access
PLC and SCADA integration
Delivery required close coordination between the new clarification infrastructure and the plant’s existing operation.
In-House Process and Mechanical Delivery
FILTEC designed the process and mechanical works in-house, then fabricated and installed the core mechanical scope through its own fabrication team. This created continuity from design through to commissioning.
The mechanical works included:
Lamella plate clarifier
Sludge removal system
Pipework, valves and fittings
Process tie-ins and sampling connections
Hydraulic control modifications
Supporting civil works included reinforced concrete structures, walkways, fencing reinstatement and a new access track.
Water Treatment PLC and SCADA Integration
FILTEC coordinated the civil, electrical and automation interfaces required for the completed upgrade.
The works included:
Turbidity and pH monitoring
Flocculation tank level switches
Clarifier sludge flow measurement
PLC and SCADA integration
Access lighting
FILTEC also provided testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance manuals, and as-constructed drawings.
