Addressing Solid and Colloid Increase in Water Supply
North East Water caters to over 100,000 residents across north-east Victoria, Australia, managing 21 water treatment facilities. Wangaratta, nestled at the convergence of the Ovens and King rivers, grappled with flooding during heavy rainfall, resulting in murky water due to heightened solids and colloids.
Wangaratta’s existing water treatment plant failed to meet Australian drinking water guidelines by adequately extracting solids. Consequently, the need for a supplementary plant arose to address both volume and quality requirements, ensuring adherence to regulations.
What We Did
Designed, Built and Commissioned the New Plant
FILTEC was awarded as the lead contractor for the Wangaratta water treatment plant. Our scope included comprehensive services ranging from design and procurement to construction and commissioning of the bore water treatment plant.
This involved careful planning and execution to ensure the successful integration of new filtration equipment, chemical storage, and dosing systems.
Supplied Critical Greensand Filtration Systems
FILTEC’s pivotal contribution to the Wangaratta bore water treatment plant was the implementation of innovative greensand pressure filters. These greensand filtration systems were designed to address the specific challenges posed by contaminants such as manganese, iron, and other impurities present in the water supply.
By supplying advanced filtration technology, FILTEC ensured the effective removal of these substances, thereby significantly enhancing the quality and safety of the treated water.
Installed Complimentary Components to Enhance Plant Performance
In addition to the greensand pressure filters, FILTEC also installed vital pipework, valves, and instrumentation. These components help to enhance the overall efficiency and functionality of the plant.
Providing seamless operation and maintenance, the installed pipework, valves, and instruments complemented the greensand filtration systems, further supporting the reliability and performance of the water treatment infrastructure.
The Result
Delivered Automated Operations and Enhanced Water Quality
The new Wangaratta bore water treatment plant delivered significant results for the community. It ensured a resilient, flexible, and reliable water supply, capable of treating turbid water stemming from adverse weather conditions. Â
Moreover, its design enables North East Water to conduct essential infrastructure work by taking the main plant offline as needed. During drought events, the plant stands ready to meet water demands efficiently, alleviating stringent water restrictions and ensuring continuity of essential services for the community.Â
