Customer Need
Treating Effluent Volumes and Meeting Discharge Standards
Following a site expansion, a South Island dairy facility needed to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant to handle increased effluent volumes and achieve higher quality treatment. The dairy waste had to meet standards for discharge to a river or for irrigation use.
Additionally, as part of an environmental initiative from the customer’s international headquarters, the plant needed to dewater sludge and ensure treated effluent met stringent in-house standards, exceeding local regulatory requirements.
What We Did
Upgraded the Dairy Facility's Wastewater Treatment Plant
FILTEC managed the comprehensive upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant from initial design through to handover. The upgrade featured a Nijhuis dissolved air flotation system (DAF) and a modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) system, incorporating alum dosing for total phosphorus removal. This design aimed to meet the high discharge standards required by the customer.
Installed a Dissolved Air Flotation System
The dissolved air flotation system was central to the upgrade, providing effective separation of suspended solids, fats, oils, and grease from the wastewater.
This system improved the overall efficiency of the treatment process, resulting in clearer effluent and reduced load on downstream treatment processes. The dissolved air flotation system’s robust performance was key to meeting the stringent discharge standards.
Provided Chemical Dosing and Sludge Dewatering Systems
FILTEC also installed various ancillary systems to enhance the treatment process. Chemical dosing systems were implemented for pH correction, coagulation, and flocculation, optimising the removal of contaminants.
Additionally, sludge dewatering and disposal systems were integrated to handle the sludge produced, reducing operational costs and creating a more sustainable waste management solution.
The Result
Achieved High Removal Efficiency and Treated Discharge Quality
The upgraded wastewater treatment plant achieved outstanding results, with an average removal efficiency of 98%, even with a high raw influent nutrient load during commissioning and performance testing. The implementation of the sludge storage system provided flexibility in dewatering options, whether handling DAF sludge, waste activated sludge, or a combination of both.
This improved operational efficiency and created opportunities for biomass recovery. The project underscored FILTEC’s capability to deliver high-performance wastewater treatment solutions, significantly benefiting the Otago dairy manufacturer.
