Reliable Disinfection for a Growing Community

The Echuca Water Treatment Plant services a rapidly growing population, that also doubles during peak tourist times, which places significant importance on the reliability and effectiveness of the chlorine gas dosing system. Due to the age of the chlorine gas dosing system and the phasing out of the Single Function Controller (SFC), Coliban Water decided to take pre-emptive action and replace all chlorine gas dosing pipework and associated dosing equipment, which included upgrading to the new RIVO controller to improve chlorine dosing gas control.

What We Did

Planned Works with No Service Interruption

Careful planning was required to ensure that there was no risk of chlorine gas being unavailable. This included undertaking the work during the cooler, lower demand time of year and always maintaining one of the two chlorine gas dosing systems on-line. At no stage during the work was chlorine gas unavailable to the plant and all the work was carried out by FILTEC certified technicians.

Early Installation and Line Replacement

The work involved initially replacing the long lengths of feed water and solution lines from the supply source to the chlorine solution distribution point, then completing concrete cutting works to allow for safe and efficient installation of the new chlorine line from the chlorine drums to the V10K gas chlorination system.

Like-for-Like Chlorine Gas Dosing System Replacement

The project included like-for-like replacement of the chlorine gas supply, carrier water, and the chlorinated water lines. In total over 185 metres of pipework was installed. It also included the like-for-like replacement of the two Wallace & Tiernan VK10 chlorinator equipment and the upgrade to the RIVO controller required for SCADA integration and control.

Upgrade to V10K Chlorinators and RIVO Controller

The Evoqua V10K (often referred to as VK10) is a compact, robust gas chlorination system designed for efficient and accurate chlorine gas dosing in water treatment.

It features a wall or panel-mounted design with a vacuum regulator at the gas supply, a precise V-notch flow control, and a water-operated injector to drive the system under vacuum. The V10K offers manual or automatic operation, clear flow indication, and reliable repeatability for consistent disinfection.

The new RIVO controller replaces the phased-out SFC, offering enhanced automation, digital interfaces, and advanced monitoring for improved operational efficiency and safety.

The Result

Safe and Future-Proofed Chlorine Gas Dosing System

The replacement of the two Evoqua V10K chlorine gas dosing systems and associated pipework was successfully carried out over five days, during business hours. The work was completed, by two certified FILTEC technicians, with support from FILTEC engineers and Coliban Water contractors.

This early installation and planning allowed for a smooth change over from the old system to the upgraded system, while keeping the plant continually operational.

This careful planning and execution of the project resulted in no loss of chlorine dosing, no OH&S issues, and future-proofing the chlorine disinfection needs for the local community.
