Non-Potable Water Reuse and Environmental Compliance

Coliban Water required a reliable and compliant UV disinfection system at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) to meet EPA discharge licence requirements and support its water reuse commitments. The WRP treats domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater from around 3,000 customers in Kyneton, Tylden, Malmsbury, and Trentham. Treated water is reused on-site and off-site for non-potable applications or, when necessary, discharged to the Campaspe River. After the existing Berson UV units failed and parts were unavailable, a robust replacement became essential.

What We Did

UV System Design for Water Reclamation and Reuse

To restore disinfection capability, FILTEC promptly sourced and installed a hire UV reactor within seven days of quote approval, keeping the plant operational. We then designed and installed a permanent UV disinfection system, replacing the failed Berson units with a Trojan UV3000Plus open-channel system. The new system provides consistent disinfection performance, supporting both river discharge compliance and safe non-potable reuse.

Complete Water Treatment Install in Regional Victoria

To install the new UV system, FILTEC completed pipework modifications and installed valves, actuators, and a recirculation cooling system. Our team also managed electrical works to integrate the system with existing plant controls. The upgrade was carefully staged to minimise disruption, allowing the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant to continue operating smoothly throughout the installation.

SCADA Integration for Automated Water Reuse Operation

The new UV system was fully integrated into the existing SCADA via the plant’s RTU and PLC for remote, automated operation. Actuated valves were installed to allow seamless switching between duty and standby units. This automation reduces manual input and enables Coliban Water to monitor and control the system in real time across its broader network.

The Result

Long-Term Water Reuse Solution with Ongoing Servicing

The successful upgrade enhanced the WRP’s disinfection reliability, supporting non-potable reuse customers and river discharge compliance. Coliban Water was pleased with the fast-tracked delivery and installation. FILTEC continues to service the plant with preventative maintenance, including UV lamp, wiper, and seal replacements. With a modern UV solution in place, Coliban Water can maintain high treatment standards and enable long-term water reuse outcomes for the community.
