Project Overview

UV Disinfection for Non-Potable Reuse and EPA Compliance

Failure of the existing UV disinfection system at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant created compliance risk for both EPA-licensed discharge and non-potable reuse. The plant treats domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater from over 3,000 customers, with treated water reused for non-potable applications or discharged to the Campaspe River.

Replacement components were unavailable, requiring a rapid solution to restore treatment capability. FILTEC installed an interim UV reactor to maintain operations, followed by design and installation of a permanent Trojan UV3000Plus open-channel system. The upgraded plant now provides reliable disinfection performance supporting both reuse and discharge requirements.

The Challenge

Restoring Disinfection Capability and Compliance Continuity

The failed Berson UV system reduced disinfection reliability and created EPA compliance exposure. The plant required a solution that could:

  • Restore disinfection quickly

  • Maintain plant operation

  • Support reuse and discharge compliance

  • Integrate with existing controls

  • Improve reliability and maintainability

The upgrade needed to minimise disruption while re-establishing a robust, compliant disinfection barrier.

The Solution

UV System Replacement with Temporary UV Reactor Installation

FILTEC implemented a staged UV replacement strategy to restore and upgrade disinfection capability. The scope included:

  • Hire UV reactor installed within seven days

  • Permanent Trojan UV3000Plus system

  • Replacement of failed legacy UV units

  • Reliable open-channel UV disinfection

The staged approach maintained treatment continuity while enabling transition to a modern UV platform.

Mechanical, Electrical and Process Integration

FILTEC completed the installation and integration works required to connect the new UV system into the operating plant. The scope included:

  • Pipework modifications

  • Valves and actuators

  • Recirculation cooling system

  • Electrical and control integration

  • Staged installation works

Coordinated delivery supported smooth installation while minimising disruption to plant operations.

SCADA Integration and Automated Operation

The upgraded UV system was integrated into the plant’s control environment for remote monitoring and automated operation. The system includes:

  • SCADA integration

  • RTU and PLC connection

  • Duty/standby switching

  • Remote monitoring and control

  • Reduced manual intervention

Automation improved operational visibility and enabled efficient management across Coliban Water’s network.

The Result

Reliable UV Disinfection for Water Reuse and Discharge Compliance

The upgraded Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant now delivers:

  • Reliable UV disinfection

  • Restored EPA compliance capability

  • Support for non-potable reuse

  • Improved automation and control

  • Ongoing serviceability

Through rapid response, staged delivery and integrated system design, the project strengthened disinfection reliability and supports sustainable water reuse outcomes for the Kyneton community.
